Most of those IE-only sites disappeared in the following years after Firefox (and Safari) gained popularity, but many of those web apps remained in use in corporate intranets, and maybe some are still used.

Many sites started requiring Windows IE, because back then it had features that were hard to do on other browsers, plus statistically "everyone" ran Windows IE Macs, Linux and such were a too tiny and too fragmented miniority to be significant in any statistic. That's just one of the many things the Mac IE didn't support, but the Windows IE did. Windows IE 4 and newer (not the Mac IE) did support the protocol via ActiveX, which was still the way to "Ajax" in IE6 new ActiveXObject('Microsoft.XMLHTTP') rather than new XMLHttpRequest(). Yes, iframes or regular frames and/or Java/Flash/Other plugins via LiveConnect for Non-IE browsers. I've already underlined my point elsewhere in this thread, but to be terse:
